2. Rice without Rain Ch. 3 - Intellectuals?

Hibiscus Flower, like the one Grandma rubbed on her nose
In the story, they complain that "the problem with today's intellectuals is that they can't do anything for themselves. All they have been taught is to think."

Comment with your response to this question: what is the danger of only knowing to think and not do?
Also, Jinda says, "what is the purpose of thinking if you don't notice the pigsty around you is empty?"

Also comment with your response to this question: If someone is an intellectual, chances are they have questioned the world around them.  How does Jinda's grandma represent this "enlightenment" we all have?  What has your intellectual epiphany been about the world around you?

  1. If you only know how to think you can plan an event but without knowing how to do it, it will never get done. If you don't notice the pigsty how will you be able to think of a way to fix it.

    Jinda's grandmother has learned to accept the way of life she lives without questioning. I try to just live my life with no questions.

  2. If intellectuals have only been to taught to think they won't know what do in a situation that invloves action. They can think of ways to handle a situation but when that situation comes they will be stuck because they will have to think about it. You can think but yet your oblivious to what is actually around you.

    When the grandma was enlightened with perfect sight she saw the world very differently. I had an epiphany that the world is huge and that there is so much to experience and thats what I want to do, enjoy my world and my life.

  3. The students from Bangkok have learned their entire lives in a different environment, they have no idea what is to live like a farmer or in the fields. All they have learned in their lives is to only think about what to do, and never put it into action. They have always relied on someone else to do it for them. My intellectual epiphany is that maybe growing up in a different place effects the way you think. Maybe you know so much or think so much but you don't even realize what is going on around you.

  4. Thinking is a factor of help for yourself but when it comes to actually doing, doing is what gets the job done. Thinking really won't get you anywhere in reality, the thing is to do. The grandma really couldnt see the things around her that clear but with the glasses she saw beauty but also the carelessness on others houses and ways of being lazy in not taking care of their stuff. I have questioned the world around me in many ways, to be honest i see more negative than positive in the world tday, upsets me.

    1. Don't give up on questioning, just do what is right in your own life and you won't be disappointed. Remember, we cannot control others.

  5. Great comments Dustin, Jonathan, and Jacky!

    @Dustin - I understand the value in picking your battles, but sometimes questioning can change your life for the better.

    @Jonathan - good job with the Grandma connection!

    @Jacky - excellent epiphany :)

  6. I see no point in thought without action. I can think something is wrong, but why think it if i cannot take the initiative to do something about it? the thought would be a pointless waste of time. what good is thinking if you can't even take in your simple surroundings?
