AVID. Emily Dickinson's "I'm Nobody"

Now that we understand the premise of the novel Speak and have discussed it in detail, I want us to explore a poem that connects to one of Anderson's themes she conveys.
We will read and analyze Emily Dickinson's poem "I'm Nobody" today. At the end of class, your exit ticket is to write a thoughtful paragraph where you outline the thematic connection between the poem and the novel. Be sure to thoroughly explain the theme.
"I'm Nobody"

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! They'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!

How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

  1. The theme they share is about being a nobody, because in the poem she's saying how she's a nobody and how she dosent want to be a somebody because people are in your buissness. In the book the girls a nobody, nobody talks to her and she's scared to speak because nobody talks to her she dosent say anything about what she's feeling. People don't think about the nobodies so they wouldn't expect that she's suffering inside.

  2. To me this poems theme is Being a Nobody is okay because not everyone is the same so some people are going to be different.Things happening during you childhood can most definitely affect you when you get older because you going to be scarred and eventually you are going to think about what happened. You will shut yourself down and not communicate with no one because yo will think that they are better than you.

  3. The themes of the poem and the book are the similar because, both the themes are talking about being alone. In the poem the girl feels alone, then meets someone else who is alone. In the book, the girl never talks and feels alone because of what happened to her.

  4. Theres always going to be someone like you. Going through the same thing you are. So dont think your the only one struglling. Theres always gonna be someone there for you. You just have to let them. So to me this is what i think. Your not the only one.

  5. In speak Melinda was a nobody, in the poem Emily explains I am Nobody. Going throughout the book she learns to speak what she feels. When walking on a bog the bog echos, making it sound like someones speaking. Both shows how someone is a nobody and sooner or later they can be somebody.

  6. In the book and the poem they both share the same similarities because it says that she is an outcast. Also in the poem it says she is a nobody. when she steps on the bog it echos, as does Melinda's voice. it opens up and makes noise, just like she did in the book.

  7. the theme that they share is that they are being an outcast at first then they speak. so also in the poem it says that they are nobody, then become 2 nobodys like rachel and melinda. then melinda speaks about any raping her just like the bog is loud when someone steps on it. someone steped on her by raping her and she finally brought up the courage to say something about it.

  8. They both relate because its saying that its okay to be a nobody just like Melinda, and at the end she speaks about the party incident and her teacher hears it. Like a bog echos when you step on it

  9. I think that they are similar because Melinda Sordino feels like she is invisible to everyone. Her friends ignore her and in the poem its meaning that they feel alone. She has no one that will be with her in the situation she has gone through. That everyone else just say things about her; about the "Nobodies." She shouldn't care about what others say either way.

  10. Being a Nobody does not have the same affect on everybody. In the poem, being a Nobody is not a bad thing. It seems as if it is actually a good thing to be a Nobody, because you are not afraid to be alone and you are less exposed. In the Novel, Speak, Melinda decides to be a nobody. Not only is it because she decides not to speak but as well because she is afraid to be expose to the world above of what she already is. I believe there is no such thing as Nobodies. We are all equal and we have to choice to decide what and who to be.

  11. The themes relate to each other in many ways. In Speak, she feels like a nobody and in this poem, she feels like a nobody too. The theme in the poem is being a nobody. In the poem, she has accepted that she is a nobody and that she is ok with that. In Speak, she's isn't really ok with it, she feels like an outcast. Her friends are speaking to her just because of one thing that they dont know all about. She doesnt like being a nobody, but she'll eventually become a somebody.

  12. In the book and in the poem it says they are a nobody. In poem the person who is a Nobody doesn't want to be found out about or be talked about because whatever you do everyone talks about it all over. in the poem she steps on the loud hollow bog as did Melinda when she spoke out to Rachel and Mr.Freeman.

  13. The connection between the book and this poem is the theme of being alone. In the beginning of the book Melinda is alone. (I don't know whether or not she is later.) The poem's theme is also about being alone, and how they aren't the only ones. I haven't gotten very far into the book, so I can't say much more. It's almost as though the book and poem were made for each other!

  14. The theme that the poem and the book share is about being a nobody. In poem it talks about how she is a nobody and how she doesn't want to be a somebody because, you will be public. In Speak she doesn't want to talk and everybody is ignoring her. She doesn't let her feelings out to others. So in the end in the poem and Speak they let thier feelings out.

  15. To me the theme is saying how she is saying her name is Nobody. It's okay because no one is perfect, no one is the same which is a good thing but sometimes its good to not tell people your a nobody or invisible when you feel like it.People will talk about you , like it says in this poem " don't tell ,They'd advertise -- ya know" . because truth is they do. In the book we are reading , the title is Speak.

  16. They are similar because in both the book and the poem they are outcast and they talk about being a nobody. In the poem the girl is talking about being a nobody but being a nobody is not always a bad thing. But in the book she talks about being an outcast but being an outcast is not always a bad thing. But they both talk about being alone.

  17. Its saying that its a pain to be somebody. The girl in the novel probably feels like that. She doesn't want all these rumors about her going through the school or her family and friends talking about it. So she just keeps to herself and doesn't attract any attention.
