AP. Great Gatsby
Before we say goodbye to our "old sports" Nick and Jay, let's choose one quote from this timeless classic and post why it is so salient.
Once again, to Zelda...
Here's a video on why Gatsby is so great.
L M B O ! That video was freaking histerical ! Anyyyyyyyywayyyyyyssss:
ReplyDeleteThe Great Gatspy had a weird ending to it. I thought Jay Gatspy was going to take Daisy, marryher, and live happily ever after but NO.... That man got ******. (Don't want to spoil it) The women in the book were complete concubines! They were awful to their husband and cheated on them causing deaths and anger to their husband, turning their husband into a serial killer. Nick was the lucky one not dead since he was in the middle of all this ! Although I liked Jordan Baker, she didnt seem to catch my good side; since she ditched Nick who was patiently waiting for her. Overall the book was terrific !(&& my first book this year) An example of this is the Titanic.
One quote out of so many in this amazing book is so hard to choose just one. My quote is "Your wife never fully loved you." This shows how the many changed Daisy and Gatsby. It showed that Daisy wanted him again because he had wealth. This also shows that you can't buy happiness with money.
ReplyDelete“He’s so dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive” (Fitzgerald 26) was a quote that I thought was funny yet had much significance. The quote is referring to George Wilson because he is being cheated on by his wife, Myrtle Wilson with Tom Buchanan. It is so obvious and bold but he just does not catch the idea. This quote can extend to times like today. In translation to modern times it could mean that people need to wake up. Two examples we have studied in class are “Good Souls” by Dorothy Parker and “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau. In “Good Souls” Dorothy Parker would make fun of those who read the essay and misunderstood it. For example, “The utmost he can receive from the world is an attitude of good-humored patience, a perfunctory word of approbation, a praising with faint damns, so to speak—yet he firmly believes that everything is all right with him.” In “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” Thoreau says in between the lines that the people are paying tax supporting the war of U.S. vs. Mexico yet in actuality they don’t even know what they are doing. The point in both cases is that people need to wake up and realize what is going on.
ReplyDeleteI like how you tied all of the readings together. Great Job!
Delete"five years" was the quote I thought was a little funny. Gatsby wanted to hook up with Daisy after not seeing her for five years,he is desperate. He wanted to hurry up and get to dating her, but shes married "hello" you don't do that even though Daisy is a cheater. When Nick invited Daisy to his house Gatsby was acting like he was on his first date, excited, and nervous. I thought that was the cute part about him.Overall I thought the book was pretty good.
ReplyDeleteOne qoute that stood out to me in the book the Great Gatsby was "He knew Daisy was extradinary but, he didnt realize just how extraordinary a "nice " girl could be." Gatsby was oblivious to see how much damage Dasiy had caused. On the outside Daisy was nice and sweet, but on the inside she harvest greed and hatred. Gatsby thought Daisy was nice, he didn't know that she wasn't the same inside and out. It shows us that we can't just judge people for what we see on the outside because you might not being seeing the real person.
ReplyDeleteA quote that I thought was very notable was "a single green light, minute and faraway, that might have been the end of a dock." This quote was so important because it was the first time the reader gets a hint of Gatsby's love for Daisy and it is also brings up the symbolism of how green equals jealousy. I liked really liked the quote because it was our first view of Gatsby and it was clouded in mystery, we did not know what he was staring at or why. There were so many great quotes in "The Great Gatsby" but I definitely think that was one of the most important quotes.
ReplyDeleteOne quote from The Great Gatsby that stood out to me was, “One thing's sure and nothing's surer; The rich get richer and the poor get – children.” This quote talks about how the poor end up getting children and they cannot support them. It also talks about although the rich get richer, they are never truly happy. This quote reminds me of Gatsby.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quotes from The Great Gatsby is “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven‘t had the advantages that you‘ve had.” This is my favorite because it relates so much to our modern day lives. Today kids don’t even blink before they insult or judge someone. It makes me think twice about what I say or think about someone because you really can judge someone unless you have walked a mile in their shoes or have seen what goes on in their lives other than what you see.
ReplyDeleteIt also really stood out to me because I am the type of person where my parents do everything for me and I am so grateful to have the opportunities that I have had and sometimes I have to stop and think that some kids don’t have it as easy as I do and have to the things my parents do for me, by themselves, for themselves.
My favorite quote from Gatsby is found in the last chapter when Gatsby's father comes to West Egg for his funeral. The quotes states, "Jimmy was bound to get ahead." This is very relevant to all the characters in the novel. They were all fixated on money and materialistic things in their lives and they were focused on chasing the American dream when instead their lives were crumpling around them because of their lack of ethical standards. I believe that these characters, along with our general society, are in need of a wake up call to realize that there are greater thing in life than money and status.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quotes from the book was the very last few sentances. It said, "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It elduded us then, but that's no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms father...and then one fine morning- so we beat on, boats againts the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." I love this quote because it is a very good concluding sentance. It leaves you with an idea to think about. Fitzgerald is explaining that even though we are working towards the future the past keeps pulling us back like the current. This gives us goals to work towards and a future to look foward to and embrace.
ReplyDeleteA quote from "The Great Gatsby that really stood out to me was "her voice is full of money." This quote shows just how much Daisy retreated into her money and used it to give her false happiness. Daisy's life revolved around money and she did not care about anyone or anything else as long as she had it. This was a very good book and I enjoyed reading it.

A quote from The Great Gatsby that stuck out to me can be found in the last chapter. It was said by a friend of Gastby not a major character in a book. He stated, "Let us learn to show friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead." In no way do I agree with the meaning of the quote, but it sums up the way friendship was valued in the book. Friendship, but more specifically knowing who your real friends are is one of the major themes in The Great Gastby and also what I wrote my paper on.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most impacting quotes from The Great Gatsby is "I hope she'll be a fool, that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." This statement shows us what it was like to be a women back then. It shows us that women were looked upon as useless, besides being wives. This quote belittles women to nothing. This quote really made me think about women and women's rights back then and how everything has changed dramatically. I found this quote very interesting.

Though, not quite impacting or changing, I did find the following quote interesting: "The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself."
ReplyDeleteFrom it, as read, you see that the current way Gatsby is was from his own doing. He made himself into who he was. There are SO many websites, seminars, and other general "motivators" that try to tell others to do this, usually so they can make a quick buck. What I found interesting about it is that a man under extreme distress was able to change himself so positively (though, this is arguable). He made himself into what everyone wanted to be at the time, a popular, rich person. Perhaps that's the key to success then, and even now: distress.
Oh well, who knows? The twenties were nearly a hundred years ago.
I agree...as they say, "necessity is the mother of invention." When you need to make it out of a tough situation, i.e. distress, as you say, you do!
DeleteGood comments! Look at Marckee's as an example of the kind of depth of response I am looking for on these. Carlos also did a commendable job.
