AP. "Good Souls"

Dorothy Parker's acerbic wit in this exemplification / satirical essay is unparalleled. Post a comment with a brief reflection on her central thesis, as well as a link to a contemporary example of "Good Souls" in today's society.

JCP's Final Reflection:
It is better to call people out when they are insincere then go on living as if everything is just fine. Why feel bad about yourself when you can point out the truth and live genuinely? Dorothy Parker said it best when she surmised, "There is no accounting for good souls."

Here's my link to modern day

  1. "Good Souls" are not always good. Dorothy says Good Souls will gain their reward in Heaven. A good example is "Pretty Little Liars" because the girls think they are helping by trying to figure out who "A" is. prettylittleliars.alloyentertainment.com/

  2. Dorothy Parker is a very deep thinker. She explains these "Good Souls" as people who are so great and help people all the time but the only reason they are doing this is for other people to see their good acts. They really arn't thinking of the wellness of others. Dorothy Parkers later goes on to explain that she feels sorry for these people because they are only hurting themselves. A contemporary link to "Good Souls" is the hit tv series, Pretty Little Liars. These girls think they are helping everyone out trying to solve this mystery but in reality they are damaging everyone's lives.

  3. Dorothy Parker's central thesis is describing how a typical good soul acts. Parker is not saying every person who does a good deed or nice act is only doing it so people will recognize them, but most are. I think a good example of a "good soul" in today's society is the show 19 Kids & Counting on TLC. The family is very sweet and they always show and announce their values on TV, but if they are as religious as they say I don't think they would advertise their beliefs on TV for money. It's kind of contradictory, I think.

  4. I strongly agree with the thesis of " There's no accounting for good souls." If you only want to be a person with good ethic and morals for a reward then your doing it for the wrong reasons. Be a genuine person and do things from the bottom of your heart.

  5. "Good Souls" are told to be not good. Dorothy tells us that good souls are bad souls in the inside. People that are "Good Souls" are actually hiding something and are hurting in the inside. What you see on the outside can be totally different on the inside.

  6. Dorothy Parker is correct that you should not constantly be trying to please everyone. Life is so much better when you let people know what is wrong and fix the issues. Good Souls do not live a happy life because they don’t focus on themselves. My example for this is Daphne from Switched at Birth. She spends all of her time trying to be perfect for everyone else while she remains unhappy.

  7. As for "Good Souls" the message is very inspiring to me. Many people make good action just because it's a way for people to see you as a good person but hypecritically it's a bad thing to do what is right just because someone is looking. People that are considered to be a good person will take 'good' actions despite what their going through. An example of this is the novel from F. Scott Fitzgeral, The Great Gaspy. This shows the social view of people and plenty examples on who does good things without their intentions of being a 'good' person.

  8. Although Dorothy Parker's essay, "Good Souls" was written more than 50 years ago, it is still very valid to our lives today. In Parker's mind, a good soul is one who thinks they will win an imaginary competition in order to one-up their peers. Unfortunately, their acts are not very genuine and in the end, it does not pay off for them in any way. A general modern-day example of a good soul in our society would be those people we all have in our lives who try too hard to be your friend, when in fact, they are just annoying. I believe that in order to truly be good, one must be sincere.

  9. Dorothy Parker is thinking and describing what people think are good souls. She is saying that even though they think they are good souls they aren't. She then goes on to to say that good souls also go unnoticed even though they are good. A modern day example would be the people that think they are so nice and popular because of it. This example shows how they go unnoticed so easily

  10. Dorothy Parker's thesis states that many people try to seem as a Good Soul to please others but mainly to please themselves. They try to feel superior to others by always acting as if they are "fine" or "okay", yet deep down they are broken. She also states that it is no competition, no one is perfect, and everyone has their flaws. Contemporary examples of Good Souls exist all around. A prime example is from a TV show, How I Met Your Mother. There is a character that tries to act a good person all of the time yet he explodes when he has had too much. Rare but not extinct are Good Souls. The ones that are genuinely Good Souls are humble and sincere.

  12. Parker's message within her work "Good Souls" points at those whom merely "act good," typically to the benefit of themselves, believing it to be the only way to be accepted into a society that would otherwise turn their nose the other way.

Unable to think of any good example for myself (See? Even online I am horrible with coming up with examples!), I will reiterate Jesus' example of The Great Gatsby. There are several characters -- and innumerous more like them beyond the book -- who were only trying to be accepted by others. The book's namesake, even, Gatsby's primary motive for his facade of a life after the war was only for someone he was in love with.

Parker points out these fallacies, and can ultimately only offer her, although satirical, sympathy.

  13. Dorothy Parker was right in her essay Good Souls when she suggested that people should not spend their lives trying to please other people. She goes on to talk about the “good souls” that are recognized today are not really good. They help people and do good deeds not for the rewarding feeling but purely for the glory and the recognition alone. Good examples of “good souls” are from the modern day movie Mean Girls. These girls prance around school appearing to the teachers and students as these perfect people, when in reality no one is perfect. In public they seem flawless but outside of school they and hateful people. Dorothy Parker also proves how people perceive others and how you should never just a book by its cover because you don’t what the pages have in store for you.

  14. Dorothy Parker's essay is stating that "Good Souls" are just people that do good thngs for others just for show, not out the kindness of their heart. She tells us that they do good deeds infront of people just so they can get recognized for being nice and geniune. An example of a movie on tv that relates to Good Souls is the movie Mean Girls. In the movie Lindsay Lohan acts like she is being nice to the "fakes" but in reality she is just being friends with them to get back at them. There are rarley any real good souls in our society today.

  15. Dorothy Parker's essay, Good Souls, expresses the reality that people, who believe they are extremely virtuous or 'good', aren't in fact good. They put on this facade for an invisible victory or divine prize. They fulfill this role as being good, sometimes because it is their last redeeming quality. Others do it simply for ulterior motives. These individuals feel they are superior and carry themselves as such because they believe wholly in their own righteousness. However, a few good souls are more discreet, they have somewhat of a genuine desire to devote themselves to people, but in the end they are not truly happy. This makes them good souls. A modern day example of this is the movie Mean Girls. The girls in the film feel they are superior but also doing other students a service by adequately telling them things about themselves. These things aren’t always so kind. They don’t realize how mean they are, thus making them good souls.

  16. Dorothy Parker basically says in her essay that "Good souls" aren't really good souls. Good souls act like they are good and virtuous, and are nice to everyone so that everyone will love them when really people don't love them. The things Good souls do are not virtuous and good, the things they do are to help their reputation.

  17. I do not agree with Dorothy Parker's thesis that good souls are bad people and there is no excuse for them. I think that certain aspects of her argument were true but I feel as if there were a lot of holes in her essay. She brings up the fact that "good souls" have an ulterior motive for the good things that they do, but to the outside world it is no different than if their motives were pure because it still help's them. Ultimately I don't agree with her thesis because even if the "good soul" is miserable, people don't know the difference and to them they truly are a good soul. My modern day example is in the show Gossip Girl. The character Blair thinks that she helps everybody by letting them do various things for her and she always thinks that she is doing them a favor. She believes herself to be a "good soul" when she is really just a horrible person.

  18. I agree with Dorothy Parker's thesis that "Good Souls" are not actually good. Good souls act like they are kind, giving, and caring when they really do it those things because they feel they have to, not because they want to. People that act this way are just as wrong as those who act bad.

  19. Dorothy Parker used her "Good Souls" essay to make fun of those who thought they were in fact, "good souls." Women who may have read this article when it was published would have probably thought to themselves, "This is totally me." In all acutality, Parker was sarcastic in her writing. It was satirical because she felt that those who act as "good souls" are not genuine in their actions. Parker believes they do it for their own good and gain. Today, the movie Mean Girls would be a perfect example of how some people may be "helping others," but not in a selfless manor. One of the main characters in Mean Girls, Regina George, makes this book called the Burn Book. The Burn Book is filled with negative and hatred statements about her classmates and some of her teachers. Regina and her friends feel like everything they post in the book is fine because it will help others acknowledge their flaws and be able to fix them. The Burn Book belittles others and makes them feel less confient. Regina and her friends thought they were helping others, but it only made her and her friends feel better about themsleves. Regina and her friends gained more confidence and felt as if they were better than their classmates.
