Hawthorne's grandfather was the unrepentant judge that oversaw the Salem witch trials that sent six innocent people to their death (by hanging and by being pressed) and ruined dozens more. Nathaniel Hawthorne was influenced by English novelist Sir Walter Scott.

The Scarlet Letter's setting was in the 17th century in New England. The Scarlet Letter talks about the Puritans, a group of England Protestants from the 16th and 17th century. Puritans wanted to reform the Church of England which meant they wanted to make changes to the it. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. In Salem the Salem Witch Trials took place. The Salem Witch Trials were in 1692, a little over a hundred years before Hawthorne was born. The witch trials in Salem were prosecutions of women who were thought to practice witchcraft. The Salem Witch Trials relate to the book because The Scarlet Letter talks about how American women were treated back in the day. It shows what society thought of them.

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the novel "The Scarlet Letter", in the years 1848-1850. The literary movement during this time was know as transcendentalism. During this time the transcendentalists believed in the power of the human mind to shape and determine experience. Their view of religion stood in contrast to groups who believed in strict societal governance of religion. Some famous works during this Thoreau's Walden, Emerson`s Essays.
ReplyDeleteThe Scarlet Letter takes place during the mid-seventeenth-century Boston, when Puritans began their attempts of reform for the Church of England. Females were sub-servant, and little more than slaves to the one whom they marry. The Witch Trials occurred nearly parallel the timeline of the story, showing yet again how men feared the possibility of women having power.
ReplyDeleteHawthorne was inspired to write The Scarlet Letter immediately after losing his employment and the death of his mother. (It would seem that all great writers really DO have everyone die around them.)
Hawthorne is a direct descendent of the Masachusetts Bay Colony. While writing The Scarlet Letter, the salem witch trials were going on. Basically this event was persecuting girls because of the puritan religion that was popular at the time. It was not the popular idea to be involved in witch craft and that is why the trials occured. As a result, Hawthorne used these experiences to influence his writings.
ReplyDeleteHawthorne in Massachusetts, in 1804. He, much like Gatsby, changed his name when he began writing from Hathorne to Hawthorne. Hawthorne married Sophia Peabody, and began surveying again. After Hawthorne lost his job he published The Scarlet Letter, in 1850.The Scarlet Letter was written in the Transcendentalist Movement, which meant that it was a reaction to the religious movements going on. A main component in the Scarlet Letter is the background of the Puritans. They are a group of religious reformers that came to Massachusetts in the 1830. I think that his main reason for writing the Scarlet Letter was his to point out how the Puritan society is corrupt.

Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of the Scarlett Letter, a novel dealing with love affairs and going against society. This novel took places in the Massachusetts Bay Colony which is currently Boston. Hawthorne wrote this book as a stress reliever from all the negative things that happened in his life. He put all of his emotion into this novel. This novel is based is colonial times during the Salem Witch Trails. The Salem Witch Trials are when Puritans women were accused of sorcery. Many women were prosecuted for this. The Scarlet Letter is set in very religious times and reflects many of the ideas of that era.
ReplyDeleteThe Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850. Hawthorne wrote this novel as a result of his unemployment and his mother passing away. He was fired from a job at the Custom House (a building where people monitored and documented goods for imports and exports). Hawthorne took his emotions and his grieving and put them into his book. The novel is set during Colonial times in the mid-1700s. Since the book is set during a heavy religious time Hawthorne's views are the views of the Puritan community. Hawthorne's family also has a history of being very religious. His ancestors played a role in the persecution of Quaker women and the persecution of women in the Salem Witch Trials. The Puritans are Christians, but had left the Church of England. They believed that the church was not strict enough on it's views and beliefs so they sought for a more pure from of Christianity.

The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850 by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The author was a descendant of John Hathorne who lived in Massachusetts Bay Colony, and was a judge in the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. When Nathaniel got a job as a customs surveyor in Salem, just like the narrator of The Scarlet Letter, he was then fired and decided to write the novel. Hawthorne discusses the Puritans from colonial times and how they were a religious sect who were against dessenting lifestyle choices. The author uses the Puritans as an analogy to the behavoir of our society today.

ReplyDeleteNathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804. He descended from a line of notorious Puritans, and the society back then was governed by Puritans. His life seemed to be surrounded by history. Hawthorne spent most of his time in Massachusets towns of Salem and Concord which are important places in history. He spent most of his time to himself, he was shy and did not really invite people to his home. He was a mysterious man and did not really mess with people. He published The Scarlet Letter after he lost his job as a surveyor. Nature is described as a character in the book, that maybe his way of comparing it to somone or something in the real world.

The Scalett story started in 1642 in Boston in puritan village. A woman named Jane Prynne, had left a town named Prison with only her baby in her arms. She committed adultry and has to wear an uppercase A on all her clothes as a badge of shamefor all to see. The whoel reason she has her child is due to the sudltry she commited. The main themes of the book are legalism, sin and guilt. Themes themes presented in the book have greatly effected how people these days look at adultry because this day in age, marriage is a huge thing. Adultry is becoming more and more common everyday yet it is still grealty look down upon. Hawhtorne’s life greatly effects this novel because his ancestors were one of the only judges that were involved during the Salem Which Trials.

ReplyDeleteThe Scarlet Letter was published in by Nathanial Hawthrone in 1850. The Scarlet Letter illustrates the Puritan way of life. The Puritans believed in a Theocracy, which is where laws are connected to the church. The Salem Witch Trails may not have occurred if the Puritans did not have a theocracy during this time. Hawthorne's ancestors played a role in the persecution of women in the Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne took blame for his ancestors actions. He hoped he could be relieved of the curse his ancestors brought upon him by being so cruel.
ReplyDeleteNathaniel Hawthorne wrote this book in Salem and Concord, Massachusets in 1840s. As for this time frame, Nathaniel was fired from his job which was a reason for writing this book filled with emotions of romance, grieve, and happiness, all the emotions of a man. Another factor that lead to this was his ancestors, who had a major role in the persicution of Quaker women, and the women of the Salem Witch Trials. As for these events he feels guilty in having kin who could cause such events.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s purpose of writing The Scarlet Letter was to emphasize the hypocrisy of Puritan life. He believed Puritanism was not the right path in which to exceed. Puritanism consisted of ridiculous punishment to those who committed the sin even if they had repented of it. He wrote the book to express his opinions in an indirect way just like Thoreau or Dorothy Parker. The time period was around 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials which were when women were accused of sorcery. Hawthorne had much stress built up through what the times were like. He is showing what took the place of the sorcery, which could now-a-days be considered adultery and many other things. Adultery is just a prime example he chose to emphasize. Sin is still the same, and there is always a punishment due to it.
