1. A Long Way Gone Intro.

As your exit slip today, I want each of you to reflect on our Philosophical Chairs discussion about Child Soldiers, as well as the other parts of today's lesson: essential questions, literary terms, and background on Sierra Leone in Africa.

Please comment with a detailed explanation of what you learned about the context of the book, A Long Way Gone, as well as your own opinion on Child Soldiers.

  1. The point of the book is to make people understand what is or was being done to children. He was shocked that people didn't even know about the war he was stuck into.
I do not believe that children should be made to be in the war. It is a decision that one should make for themselves. No one should be forced to put their life on the line.

  2. The things that i have learned about the child soldiers is like they are forced to go and fight and if they live could be scared or life and they would have to deal with suffering. But i still think that minors can join the war if they want to because it is their choice if they want to should be able to.

  3. I think young people shouldn't be seeing all that killing. But i also think that teens at the age of 16 and up should go to war.Teens should join because they should stand up there country and they should protect there family. If there not mature they'll be mature enough when they see all that killing. But that's my opinion many people have different opinions.

  4. The things that i have learned are that u will suffer if u get drafted into the military if u dont want to go. But I think that if your 16 and want to go to the war that is your choice not anyone elses because you are probally mature. You have to fight for your freedom and stand up for yourself.

  6. I learned that its about survive not about who needs to be died or who should i kill, it was necessary in order to survive. I dont think child soldiers should happen because no child would no why they are doing this and when they are older it would feel like a birden on them.

  7. Well that there affected to the extension that they need rehabilitation in getting back with society because there lost about the things they've done in the war. Also the child soldiers get forced or unwillingly put into the army because theirs no side to go to so they want more people to be in it so that one side can look bigger than the other and make the people think that the biggest side is good. That lots of people have lost many friends and family members cause of war.

  8. I learned that the war in Sierra Leone is just like the Holocaust in a way. The people suffering were suffering, and the Americans didn't hear about this till people from Africa started coming to the US. Also it shows how people haven't change too. When I was in 6th grade my world history teacher told us about this. It was called invisible soldiers. Basically it was telling us about whats happening in Africa.

The way I feel about the child soldiers is that its wrong and it needs to be stopped. Plan and simple.

  9. -About this book I learned that some people are dragged in to wars even if they don't want to fight. In some places kids or teenagers don't have a choice and they have to do it because they are forced to do it.
-I don't think that is fair for kids to be fighting in wars.I really don't think kids or teenagers should have to fight in wars because we don't know better and we can get kill or kill innocent people.

  10. Ishmael wrote A long way gone to show that his life wasnt easy. he wants children to read his book and to understand when they're being manipulated. I still feel like no matter where you are from. you shouldnt be forced to join the military.

  11. A Long Way Gone sounds like a interesting book.I think the context of this book is to get his story out to children that can take life for granted and for children that were in a war like he was.I don't think children should become a soldier in a war. They haven't even began to live life and their body hasn't even fully developed yet.

  12. The point of the book is to make people see that people make minors to go to war by telling them lies. Tell how he was surprise that that no body knew what was going on in Africa.

I think that that people should not make minor to go to wars. They most let them decide their own life.

  13. As far as reading the context of the book, He "Ishmael Beah" was forced into the goverment army at the age of thirteen . And from what we debated on today in class bring back on how us kids that disagree with being forced into the army or millitary shouldn't be . Because we're kids and we should be able to live life just like other's should and not involing voilence. that should be the adult's job and not our as "minors" .

  14. Reading the book, Ishmeal Beah was forced into government military at the young age of thirteen. In class we argued about kids being able to enter the military, or kids being forced into the military. I agreed on kids being able to join the military at their own will and risk, but with kids and teens being forced into the military i disagreed because if an immature child is forced into the military they wont be able to distinguish between a life and death situation or a game.

  15. I think that the context of this book is to show that kids these days complain about their lives and how hard they have things when they don't realize that there are kids younger than them that have it way harder.
In my opinion, I don't think that kids should be forced into the military, one because no one should be forced to do something they don't want to do. Second because us minors shouldn't have to see all that killing because it could really do some damage to them.

  16. I learned that it was really easy to make minors go and fight. He is wanting to tell people about the war and how it was like doing things you did not want to do.

I think it is wrong to have child soldiers because at a young age it can have a big impact on them and hurt them in an emotional way

  17. We started to read the book 'A Long Way Gone' and so far it is interesting. It's about the author, his name is Ishmael Beah he was a child soldier too. Yester day we did philosophical chairs and debated on if teens should be sent to war, I agreed that they should if they had the choice to go or not with the support of their parents..

  19. I think that Ishmael Beah wrote the story of his life for other people to reconize what people are doing to kids all around the world. I think that he wants people to notice how easy it is for people to basicly brainwash kids to do anything thing want them to do.

I dont think that kids should be forced to fight in wars. they need to be able to live there lives as kids and has fun.
