Honors English II. The Chosen - Dedication Page Explication

There is a quote on the dedication page of The Chosen by Karl A. Menninger. Reread this quote and explain, in a comment reply, its significance.

Here is the quote:

"When a trout rising to a fly gets hooked on a line and finds himself unable to swim about freely, he begins with a fight which results in struggles and splashes and sometimes an escape. Often, of course, the situation is too tough for him. In the same way the human being struggles with his environment and with the hooks that catch him. Sometimes he masters his difficulties; sometimes they are too much for him. His struggles are all that the world sees and it naturally misunderstands them. It is hard for a free fish to understand what is happening to a hooked one."

Some hints to explicating this quote:
  • What might being "hooked" symbolize?
  • What does the quote suggest about perseverance?
  • Why are struggles often misunderstood?
  • Why would it be difficult for a free "fish" to understand what happens to a hooked one? (i.e. Who are the symbolic "fish?")

  1. In the quote, "being hooked" might mean being trapped to what the world throws out to you. The fish are hooked to what the fisher throws out to them if they are weak enough to fall for it. Humans are trapped as well by the world. The quote suggests that people should persevere to what the world wants them not to. It is hard for people to understand certain trials whenever they have not gone through them. "It is hard for a Free Fish to understand what is happening to a Hooked one."

  2. In the quote, "being hooked" its means that you are caught and hooked by the obstacles that the world throws at you. The fish get hooked when the fisherman throw bait to them. Most of the fish can't resist because they think it is real food. Just like fish, humans are hooked by the world too. This quote suggests that people should persevere to do what they should not do. Struggles are misunderstood because some people have not experienced the struggle. A free fish does not really know what is happening to a hooked one because they think he is just going after food.

  3. When the fish gets hooked its like when a human comes across a problem. All humans come across a problem in their life and so they try to solve their problem and some people struggle more than others. Some people manage to get out of their predicament easier than others and this is what the quote is talking about. When the fish gets hooked it immediately tries its hardest to be free and it never gives up and continues to try to get back in the water where it knows it is safe. A human doesn't literally get hooked like a fish does but when a human has a problem they always persevere to overcome their problem. However one's problem is not always the same as the problem of another and may be too great to overcome. When they cannot defeat their obstacle their struggle spews onto other aspects of their life and this is what other see. If a person had trouble with something like gangs and their life revolved around them and their struggle was to escape that type of life but they aren't able to, then all the world sees them as is another typical, good-for-nothing gangster. The world misunderstands them because they do not go through what they have. People do not know about the true struggles that go on in their life, day and night. Someone who is rich and has had their parents spoil them and live in a friendly neighborhood will not understand the everyday issues of thhis person. This is what it means when it talks about the free fish not understanding the struggle of a hooked fish.

  4. In the quote being hooked I think it means being trapped to what is thrown at you by the world unto you. I think the fish is hooked to the fishing line from what the fisher throws out to them since they are wear enough to fall for it. Just like we are trapped by the world world. The quote suggests that people persevere to what the world want them not to do. It is difficult for people to recognize paths when ever they have not face them yet. It is hard for a free fish to understand what is happening to a hooked one." Because they are just going after food.

  5. To be a human caught in the world's temptations and trials is to be a fish on a hook. We become mesmerized by the sight, though what seems to be the most beautiful, in an apparent sense, is the danger to us, thus getting caught in a trap in which we wriggle and struggle to remove ourselves from. Though while the other fish of the pond may snicker, no one has the authority to judge you for luring into the trap, but also for the way you remove yourself from the trap as well; the tolerance of one footing varies from another. Though they may laugh now, it is only because they are ignorant to the struggle. They're words haven't any value until they've encountered the trial you've entered yourself. We all have the loss of faith in which we feel as if we're twenty feet below the dirt without exit, and only a selective few will strive to remove themselves from this dilemma. This is when you may prove to those who judge you that you're stronger and wiser than they believed. You can either allow the weight to crush you, or you can at least attempt to hold the weight, though the moral still remains that you must act within the regimen of perseverance.

  6. being hooked would mean having a problem. The problems may be difficult or easy for one to overcome. Most problems can either be resolved or resolved over time or can never be solved and may change ones life forever. The quote suggest what one should not do. Many struggles are often misunderstood because one was never in that situation but when the time comes for that one person to be in that situation, they regret it knowing they had done wrong to another for the same thing. no one will ever understand a struggling person until they too have struggled but some do not always learn their lesson. You cannot relate to what you have not experienced so you would never understand but may think you do. Life has struggles that you should or want to overcome but not everything will ever be easy and that is what life brings for all to understand one another's pain.

  7. In this quote i think being hooked means facing the problems that cross your path. The quote suggest on perseverance that you should not stop fighting when facing a "hook" or problem. Stuggles are often misunderstood because people just go based off of what they know, when they barely know anything abput the struggle. I think thats why it is had for a free fish to understand what is happening to hooked one. They cant really know how the hook one feels unless they have gone through the same thing.

  8. Being hooked symbolizes people who have struggles in life. When one has problems to deal with, they feel as if it's hard to keep living, just like a fish being "hooked." Their problems have basically taken their liberty and freedom so all they must focus on is finding a solution to their current problem. This is similar to a fish being hooked because that fish only has one worry, and that is freeing itself from the hook. The quote suggests that perseverance is key to success. One must keep persisting and not give up in order to achieve their goal. Struggles are often misunderstood because the person with that certain struggle is the only one who knows what it feels like to go through it. The people that aren't going through that struggle don't know what it's like because they aren't experiencing it firsthand. One can't know how another person feels going through a struggle without experiencing that same struggle for themselves, and even then it isn't the same because not everyone has the same reaction to the same situation. The "free" fishes are the ones that haven't gone through something that the "hooked" fishes have gone through. The "free" fishes may judge the "hooked" fishes because they themselves haven't gone through what the "hooked" fishes have gone through. The "free" fishes look at the problem from their perspective, not from the perspective of the "hooked" fishes.

  9. Being hooked may symbolize being caught in a problem that you cannot get out of. But fish always try to get out of the trap and fight their way away from the hook and they never give up, and that is what this quote suggests about perseverance. Struggles are misunderstood because some people are unaware to what someone even goes through and sometimes people are not often lured into that hook that catches them. A free fish doesn't understand what it is like to be hooked until they actually are hooked.

  10. Karl A Menninger was saying that a person with problems is like a trout being hooked. The trout will try to escape from the hook and the person will try to overcome their problem. They will try to succeed and might actually win, but sometimes the problem is just to difficult to overcome or escape. When other people or"freed fish" look at a person struggle with something they have not experienced, they will not understand what that person is going through in their life.

  11. Being "hooked" means someone is facing a problem. So if I am having trouble with a class it is like i am hooked on my struggles in that class. Perseverance is not ever giving up and this quote says that you can always try to break away from the hook and maybe you can escape once but it is not always going to happen no matter how hard you try. The struggles are misunderstood because people don't always go through the same struggles that I may go through. It's difficult for a free fish to understand what a hooked one goes through because they are the one hooked. For example, back when there was segregation, white people were the free fish and colored people are the hooked ones. We didn't understand the pain we put them through because we weren't the ones that were "hooked."

  12. In the quote being "hooked" means that you are stuck in a situation. You are having problems and you are trying to compete against them. It is suggesting that people should persevere to do what they are not to do. Struggles are misunderstood because the person has not yet been through the situation another has already done. It would be hard for a free fish to understand what a hooked fish is going through because they are not the ones hooked. They are not the ones going through the struggle of breathing. As it is said they are "free" they are not trapped in a "hooked" situation.

  13. The quote, being "hooked" symbolizes that humans get hooked on to some struggles in life, and fight there way through to over come it. The free fish do not know how that hooked fish is feeling unless that fish have been hooked before. It's like rich people and poor people. That rich person do not know how the poor person is feeling because they are not going through the same struggles as the poor person. Unless the rich person have been there and done that and work through there struggles to get to the top. But a person that have been rich there whole life they have no idea how to get through struggles like poor people. The free fish is free and living happy but the hooked fish is struggling to get off that hook so it is very hard for that free fish to understand what that hooked fish is going through.

  14. "Being hooked" symbolizes the obstacles that come with life and to fight for your freedom. The quote states that when you work for what you want, you'll eventually reach your goal. Struggles are usually misunderstood because every person deals with different types of struggles. A free fish wouldn't understand the pain that a hooked fish goes through.

  15. In The Chosen, one of the epigraph's talk about a fish getting hooked while the ones who roam free do not know what it's like to be "hooked". To be "hooked" could symbolize people being brought up to do/be a certain way. In the novel it talks about two Jewish boys who want a more open/free life but because of family tradition the boys began to feel "hooked". In the story Danny is seen as very intelligent, but his intelligence is limited because of the insular life he thinks he has to live. Reuven on the other hand is not really living a insular life and has more [power to do as he pleases which creates a conflict that many cease to notice. Perseverance plays a big part in the story as in also the quote. The quote uses perseverance to stress that even though you may feel trapped by something, press on because you never know what the future holds and one day you nay become free from the situation you had recently encountered. Many people struggles go misunderstood or sometimes even unnoticed because people hardly ever tell what's really going on with their personal being, which makes people think everything is ok. In the story you will see a lot of this because Danny is afraid of what his traditional society will think of him.

  16. Getting "hooked" on something symbolizes that a person could be in a struggle in which they are having a great deal of trouble getting out of. the "free fish" is considered to be the people who are not currently experiencing these problems. the ones who are not experience these problems may think that the other person has it easy and they have it hard. a similar comparison could be used to compare the rich and the poor. the rich aren't that grateful for what they have but yet poor people are really grateful for what they have because they do not really have much. so there for the rich cant really understand what the poor go through. therefore the poor are represented by the hooked fish and the rich are the free fish. the rich have no idea what the poor people go through. if the rich could spend a day in the life of a poor person then they would truly be happy with what they have and not complain about what they dont so also they have no idea how hard it is for the poor people to make it.

  17. Being hooked symboises a problem or a struggle. Someone who had never had that problem might not be able to understand their feelings. They migth be able to comprehend the situation but not fuly understand what the person is feeling. Like a rich person that was born rich will not understand a poor person only see there problems. No matter how hard they try a person can understand a problem they have never had to deal with. If they never had to deal with it they will not know how it feels to be hooked even as they see it because they can still freely swim. A situation migth not be understood if not all the information was told or is present. what is seen is not all that must be understood to understand you must also know how the person feels.

  18. there are many thing out there in the world that are thrown out to many free fish to try to lure them in. You could call these obstacles bait. A free fish could go for the bait and get caught to become a hooked fish. No matter how hooked in you are to bait, you can always over come it and become free. Many people go through things that no one else could understand. This only makes things worse. If you are a free fish you might not understand how a hooked fish feels because you are not in his situation. You can roam around free with out always being pulled in by the things that this world has.

  19. in my opinion ''Being hooked'' symbolizes that most people get stuck in some problems in their life and they can not get out of the problem. for example the fish that gets hooked likely will be caught just like people. When people are hooked if the fight is to strong for them they will just give up and let the problem that there in reel them in. people that are free like the fish they do not know how it feels to be caught in a line and the struggle to get out. fish that have escaped would symbolize the people that have been caught up in problems and finally escaped

  20. The quote "being or getting hooked" symbolizes the struggles in human life by going through the bumps and hard times in life when you are "splashing around." Sometimes you can escape from these troubles. If you can persevere though the rough times in life you can "escape from the hook." Some people don't understand what others go through in life and these so called "hooks" can affect people in different ways. Some examples of this would be things like if you lost someone you loved and others around you might not know what that feels like. Also like if others get miss treated for how they act or even for who they are. It would be very difficult for the "non-hooked fish" to see or feel what the "hooked fish" is going through. The free "fish" might not have ever experienced what had happened to the "hooked" one.

  21. This quote reminds me of one of the African proverbs that we have studied. "The one who has not made the journey calls it an easy one." In the same way people in our country judged the Jews without understanding their struggles. Being hooked symbolizes being trapped or being limited in what you are allowed to do. The Jews represent the hooked fish and the Americans represent the free fish. We see the Jews' problems and, unsurprisingly, we do not even try to understand. We have not had to face the same problems as them, therefor it is hard for us to know what it is like. Some Jews were able to overcome these barriers and help us understand while others refuse to associate themselves with any non-Jews. In the end the fault lies in their stubbornness.

  22. The quote being "hooked" symbolizes people being trapped by conflicts or problems in life. It also symbolizes a reason to fight or a desire to escape. This quote suggest perseverance is key to understanding the value of life and freedom. It also show the fight to overcome certain struggles. The qote is saying that you never know the severity or seriousness of someone's problem until you actually live it. It's like telling a prison inmate that prison is not that bad when you have never broken the law. Some problems other people have may be the smallest thing in the world to us, but big as a galaxy to them. It is very difficult for you to tell a "hooked fish" that they are being dramatic when you have never been in the water.

  23. Being hooked symbolizes a huge struggle. When fishes get hooked, they struggle quite drastically to free themselves or survive. The quote is basically saying the same thing about perseverance. When fishes get hooked, they feel inept and useless. Struggles are often misunderstood because when people have struggles, they don't go around telling other people about their struggles. People may think that everyone is normally happy due to such optimism out of the main "problem," but that's not always the case. People seem to have struggles on a daily basis. A free fish cannot feel the same way as a hooked fish because free fish haven't experienced what a hooked fish has experience. People may feel sympathy, but they don't have the same pain as someone who's struggling due to something very atrocious.

  24. In the quote "being hooked" might symbolize someone caught in trouble and tangled in a mess and trying to get out of it. A free fish might show people don't worry to much live a happy life and don't get caught by the mouth you can make your own decisions. Many people do or go through bad things but as long as they refuse the bait and go down there own path things should be ok. If you make the right choices in life you will not be dragged into the bad one's and instead live a happy free life.

  25. The symbolism of being hooked goes back into the story "The Chosen," for example the Jewish are expected to be the best among each other , for lack of better words. They are hooked into an eternal competition between each other. This quote sparks very many meanings within itself. Human beings often take the bait and this our nature of making mistakes and being imperfect. He begins to "fight" and "struggle" to fix the mistake but sometimes this only digs him deeper. But at times he is able to break free and no one notices him until he messes up. The cat watches from afar while the small mouse struggles helplessly to break free from the trap.

  26. When the quote talks about being "Hooked", it is talking about when people are having troubles and they can not get past them. The quote says " after splashing and thrashing sometimes the fish will get off the hook." This is saying that the harder you work at something, then the more reward you will get out of it, like becoming unhooked. If a person who has never been "hooked", tries to explain being
"hooked" to someone then they do not have a real side of the story to tell. This like when people try to help with life issues when they have never been through it, and most of them have their own issues they need to fix.

  27. In the quote, "being hooked" symbolizes the state of a human being going through some shape or form of a struggle. Being the 'free fish" symbolizes a human that can "swim" freely and has no worries and struggles at all. This quote represents the fact that if someone has enough perseverance, they can break free and overcome that struggle. Struggles are often misunderstood because humans tend to be very judgemental towards someone even though have never step foot into that person's shoes and has not experienced what they are going through. Just like a free fish has no idea how it feels to be captured on a hook.

  28. "Being hooked" symbolizes the obstacles that come with life and to fight for your freedom. it also means that one person who is free does not understand what you did to not be free. The quote states that when you work for what you want, you'll eventually reach your goal. Struggles are usually misunderstood because every person deals with different types of struggles. A free fish wouldn't understand the pain that a hooked fish goes through

  29. Being "hooked" symbolizes that there is a problem that is being faced in someone's life. The quote suggests that you should always have perseverance. No matter what life throws at you and what problems you must face you should always stick it out and there will be a way to make it through the problem, but you must work hard to do so. Struggles are often misunderstood because not everyone goes through the same struggles. Everyone has their own life and each life presents its own problems or situations. Not everyone goes through the same thing. A free fish would not understand the struggles of the hooked one because it is not going through the same thing as the hooked fish.
