Classic Poems

In one comment, I want you to reflect on our class reading of the two classic poems, "Invictus" and "O Captain, My Captain."  Each reflection should be at least one paragraph.

Thought Questions: What is the central theme or controlling idea in each poem? Who could benefit from reading these kinds of poems? What facts did you learn from our discussion? How do the poems make you feel? Would you recommend these poems to a friend? Why or why not?

Invictus, by William Ernest Henley

  1. I felt that "Invictus" had a very empowering tone. It was meaningful and in depth. Athletes could definitely find motivation through this poem. Anyone going through a difficult time actually could. "O Captain, My Captain" was emotional towards its time period. I would recommend "Invictus" to others because it can be related to various situations in life. I don't feel like "O Captain, My Captain" is easily transferable.

  2. The two poems that we read out loud in class yesterday were two very motivational and inspiring poems. They both had a message being sent through them. The first message we read was about how the guy in the poem never gave up no matter how many obstacles he had been put through. The second poem we read out loud was about how the people never let go of their captain, Abraham Lincoln. Even though he passed away he was and will be always remembered. These poems made me feel both happy and sad. The first poem was my favorite because it really tells how no one should give up no matter what situations they’ve been through. I would definitely recommend these poems to a friend.

  3. O captain my captain
o captain my captain is about Abraham Lincolns assassination. it is telling how he feels about his death.

    Invictus
invictus is about being oppressed. He is telling how he never gives up no matter what happens.

  4. Both of these poems have a very strong effect on me. When i read "Invictus" i find it easy to imagine the point from where the author wrote it. I believe that everyone has had at least some obstacle in their life that they can relate this poem to. Reading this when you are feeling down should help you realize that many others have overcome worse.
"O captain, My captain" doesn't have as much of an effect on me. It is still however a very powerful poem and I can imagine it would relate to someone who had lost a relative at some point. For instance if my father ever passed away, this poem would describe it perfectly because he is like a leader to my family along with my mother.

  5. The 2 poems that we read in class yesterday i though were good poems. They were both inspiring poems. I enjoyed reading them, they both seemed to had a message with them. They were both amazing poems. i liked the second one a lot because it talked about Abraham Lincoln. About how he will never be forgotten and it's true he won't.

  6. Both poems represent perseverance and bring forth the fact in which it is okay to fall, but you must rise back up in order for your effort to be accountable. You must be persistent in your battles and must enter the battle aware that you will face a very powerful assault; though, it is only powerful to the fullest extent if you are weak and do not show potential, and you are only powerful if you find it in you and exert it, and this is when your opponent shall be overpowered by your will and might.

Though, if you may not be able to conquer the battle, and might you fall, your effort will stain as scars on your opponent and will be the evidence to prove that you've prevailed. Everyone has the aptitude to be a hero.

  7. The central theme of "Invictus" is the person is unbeatable. They can't be beat and how they aren't afraid either. People who are constantly depressed could benefit because they need something to let them know that they can do anything, and they are unbeatable. This poem made me feel like I can do anything and not lose. I feel like this poem really relates to me. I definitely would recommend this poem to anyone.
The central theme of "O Captain, My Captain" is about Abe Lincoln and what he did to abolish slavery and because of that, he was assassinated. People who want to be a good leader could benefit from this poem because it teaches you how to be a good leader and put your people first. I felt like the poem made me feel like i could be a leader. I would recommend this poem to anyone who wants to be a good leader.

  8. Both poems have effects to me. They both effect me in pretty much the same way. Life is short, You aren't promised everyday. So live the life that you have as much as you can. From these poems I realized that many ,en that did great for their country died because of what they believed in and stood for. Yes, I would, because everybody should know that when they breath their last breath knowing "I lived life to the fullest."

  9. The central theme of the poem "Invictus" was to show the audience that although the author went through some hard times he still held on and went after his dreams. He never gave up. Personally I feel anyone that is second guessing their dreams would benefit from this poem. It gives the reader a sense of hope for the future.

The central theme of the poem "O Captain, My Captain" is to, in a way, say goodbye to President Abraham Lincoln. He was assassinated and this poem mourns his death. The author explains that the death of his "captain" came with a victory. This poem could show people to believe that often times there is something bad that happens, but the good may outweigh the bad.

  10. The me the poem on the "Invictus" was a powerful tone on how you shouldn't let anyone chose your faith, but more to athletes. All athletes hope to play in the NFL, MLB, etc. so this poem is basic telling you not to give up on your dreams or don't allow them to tell you that you never make it and not to let them bring you down. The poem "O Captain! My Captain" it was about Abraham Lincoln death. Lincoln believed that there shouldn't be slaves in America and that he did everything in his power to prevent that but ended up dying for what he believed was right.

  11. In Invictus I think that the theme of the poem is that it doesn’t matter what people say about you, or do to you, you should always believe in yourself and to never give up. In O’ Captain, My Captain that you should love everyone, like they loved Abe. Athletics and people with low self – esteem could benefit from reading Invictus. And people of lost someone very special could benefit from reading O captain my captain. I would most likely suggest one of my friends to read Invictus.

  12. Invictus is a poem that aims to show a person's struggles to live out the problems in life. It shows that a person will always be in control of their own souls even with a huge amount of physical torment. Athletes and people who have goals to for athletic jobs that require strength. The peom make me feel like I need to try harder in life especially in sports. I would recommend this poem to athletes and classmates.

  13. I think that both of these poems have very strong meaning to me and my life. When i read "Invictus" i find it easy to see the imagery behind it. Everyone in the world has had at least one obstacle in their life that they can relate this poem to. reading this shows that you can over come more than you think.
"O captain, My captain" doesn't have as much of the meaning to me as "invictus" does. It is still, however, a very powerful poem in it self and I can imagine it would relate to someone else who had lost a relative or close friend at some point. This makes me think of if i lost my dad or mom because they are like the leaders of my family.

  14. The central theme of "Invictus" is to be the master of your own fate and not let anything else control it. "O Captain, My Captain" talks about a great leader whom died. The poems would be for people who are going through great trials or have a dead leader. They were very good, deep, and sad. I've learned what "Carpe Diem" is. Live, while we are alive.

  15. Both poem that we read I felt were very powerful and had great messages. They are definitely one of my favorite poems that I have ever read. The first poem, Invictus, is a very strong poem. It is showing how the author was kind of in a dark place and he brought himself out of it because he started believing in himself.
The second poem, O Captain, My Captain, is about how you need to live everyday like its your last and to not take anything for grated. It is also saying that if you make a difference in the world, even when you are dead, you will always be talked about. These poems made me feel both happy and sad.
The 1st poem was my personal favorite because I really love the message behind it.
I would definitely recommend these poems to a friend because I think they would like the messages behind them also.

  16. The theme of "Invictus" is to never give up on yourself no matter what obstacles stand in your way. The theme of the second poems is that the people never let go of an important leader, Abraham Lincoln. These poems would benefit us because it is showing us that we should never give up on ourselves. It also shows us that if you want to become a leader you have to get through those obstacles and speak out loud for what you feel or think. Abraham Lincoln is and always will be an important leader. These poems made me feel joyful and depressed. I would definitely recommend these poems to a friend. I would recommend them both because it could help them get inspired and feel joyful. They could also get depressed for the poem,"O Captain, My Captain" because it talks about someone very meaningful, but also shows them to be a leader. -Ashley Dominguillo

The first poem was talking about I believe that even when you're sinking in your own sorrow or darkness you can always see your way out of it. And the second one "O captain My captain" is about a leader who accomplished so much.

  18. Invictus and O Captain My Captain were very good poems showing you a message about yourself. In "Invictus" it talks about no matter how much pain someone puts you through at the end you will always be the person you are. In the poem "O Captain My Captain" was used in Dead Poet Society. It is almost relating to Abraham Lincoln because it's talking about your leader. Showing you to never give up on yourself even through all the hard obstacles in life you go through. These type of poems inspire someone when they're going through all the pain they might go through everyday in life. I would recommend it to a friend through tough times.

  19. Invictus is a poem about standing firm against the hardships of life. Despite all of the horrible things that may happen to you, your determination does not waver. For example "my head is bloody, but unbowed" is a perfect example of the strength that we should all have. We should strive to overcome our struggles and remain determined to face life's never ending problems.
O Captain My Captain is a poem that is about Abraham Lincoln, however it is very subtle. It could tell a story about many leaders that have become martyrs, like Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr. The poem tells about the group's victory, but grieves for their fallen leader. At the end of their struggle they have won and lost simultaneously. They wish that their leader could have been alive to see the reward of their triumph.
The theme of the first poem is that you should always stand strong against adversity. The second poem is not as easy to pick apart. They have won, but lost their leader. The theme could be that in every victory something is lost. (That sounds pretty legitimate.) A lot of my friends could learn some life lessons from the first poem, but not the second. They need to learn how to be tougher, and not give in so easily (I'm being a total hypocrite.). I love the first poem, but not the second one. The first has a very strong, clear message that I need to incorporate into my own life. The second does not apply to my life very well, unfortunately. I would definitely recommend these to my friends (the smarter ones). They would really appreciate these crucial life lessons.

In the poem Invictus I think that the theme of the poem is it doesn’t matter what people say or do you should always believe in yourself and to never give up.You shouldn't think about the horrible things that can happen to you. It's all about your determination , your mind set and the goals you want to achieve in life.
In O’ Captain, My Captain is a poem about Abraham Lincoln standing up for what he believed. This poem also symbolizes other famous people that stood up for things that they believe in . It is also showing you to never give up on yourself even through all the hard things you go threw in life.I would recommend these poems to a friend because I think they would like the messages behind them also. Both poems were very powerful and had great messages.
