AVID. Current Event

For nonfiction narrative, similar to This I Believe, I want you to find one editorial that has been written about a current event in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, or the Raleigh News & Observer online.

In your comment, you need to paste a link to your article as well as a brief summary in your own words.

Then, after you have read and understand your article, you need to write a two page, typed reflection on the editorial you chose.

The paper is due at the end of class on Friday. The blog post is due by the end of class today, Thursday.

  1. My current event is about Sandy Hook. Sandy Hook was a horrible event that happened a couple weeks back. A man went into a elementary school and killed dozens of kids. Little innocent kids for no reason, just meanness. There are so many mean people in this world today. Everywhere you go you are at risk of getting hurt. We live in a extremely dangerous world. The man that killed all these kids went and killed hiself right after he did it. Innocent kids were killed for no reason.

  5. http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/trayvon_martin/index.html

This is a ling to an article called "Trayvon Martin Case (George Zimmerman)" written by SERGE F. KOVALESKI for the New York Times.

This is my current and it is about Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martain was a 17 year old male who lived in Sanford, Fla. He was shot and killed while walking home one night. On Feb, 26, 2012 by Mr. Zimmerman.

I don't think Mr. Zimmerman had the right to kill him because Trayvon Martain was unarmed.

LInk to current event called "Tinsel town, ghost town" written by Hillary De Vires.
The $26 billion foreclosure settlement deal announced that they arrived in the final throes of Hollywood’s annual awards season. It also arrived too late for my a screenwriter and director who moved out of her two-bedroom house the week before last, after her bank foreclosed on the property. there are claims that someone died and haunts this house, yet no one has proved it true or false.

This is a link to a article called "Animal cruelty and free speech" for the "New york times" It's basically talking about how its not fair that other laws are enforced but when it comes to animal cruelty thats not so important.
I believe this is true because people enforce laws on domestic violence and stuff but when it comes to animals they act like its not as serious. It truely is animals feel just like humans they just cant do or say anything about it

  10. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/20/preparing-students-for-a-newtown-like-disaster/?ref=education

This is a link to an article called "Preparing Students for a Newton-like Disaster" written by Sara Mosle for the New York Times. It talks about how they want for the teachers to have guns with them to defend themselves. Also that schools should practice lockdowns every few months. That teachers should practice running to the door, turning off the lights and huddling the kids in a corner so it appears as if there is no one in the room. I think that teachers shouldn't keep guns, because what if a child gets it and goes against someone. Also if you have the gun locked up and if you need it for an emergency how would you get it so fast. Some of the teachers don't even know how to shoot a gun.

This is a link to an article called "Military has to decide which combat jobs will open for women" written by: Lolita C. Baldor for the local newspaper.

The Pentagon decided to lift the ban on women serving in combat. Now military leaders will have to decide which, if any, jobs should be open to only men. It will be up to the military service chiefs to recommend and defend whether women should be excluded from any demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy SEALs or Delta Force. A retired army general said "while their focus must remain on winning the battles and protecting their troops, they will now have the distraction of having to provide some separation of the genders during fast moving and deadly situations. I think women should be able to do whatever men do on the battlefield.

This is a link to an article called "Thief robs Fayetteville youth center, leaves apology note" written by Brian Mims for WRAL

This article got my attention because Cumberland County Sheriff Investigators are looking for a thief or thieves that broke into a youth center and stole some things. Not only did they steal things, there was something left behind. What was it?

    This is the link.

This article is about how Obama apparently failed to act upon MLK's dream. I do not see why it is his responsibility to do so. It says that he, out of all the democrat presidents, has focused the least on racial and poverty issues. I did not choose this because I agree with it. It actually makes me angry, to tell the truth. What, in our society, is not equal? I apologize that we don't kiss your a**.

This article is about the 49ers and the Ravens going to the Super Bowl. Whats interesting about it is the 49ers used to be a terrible team till the coach Jim Harbaugh became their head coach he turned the team around going to 2 NFC championships and now going to the Super Bowl. In this match up the two coaches are brother Jon Harbaugh (Ravens) and Jim Harbaugh (49ers). This should be a really good game and I think the Ravens will win.-Hayden Douglas

  15. My Current Event is about abortions. This type of thing happens every single day because of being reaped or sexually abused. Many girls are sexually abused by going to parties or to different places and someone putting something in their drink. Then girls get pregnant and have to live with that baby forever because of someone acting stupid.

This is a link to an article called "Riding the Boy Band Wave while it lasts" writtern by Jon Caramanica for the New York Times.

One Direction has been the spotlight recently, but this article thinks their spotlight won't last a while but rather they should enjoy the time they have. It is also talking about how other boy bands are not good enough in comparation of One Direction. Their new album is also on the spotlight which is their second, "Take Me Home". It includes a lot of great songs and is much better than regular American Boy Band songs.

This is a link of Death Shows Fragility of Pandas’ Lives written by Leslie Kaufman in New York Times.

The Giant Panda cub had died Sunday morning from uneven coloring and hardness in her liver. Every staff in the Zoo was shocked from the incident. The panda was discovered in her mothers den while the mother that gave birth to her was out of honks in distress. At first the Zoo officials thought that the mother had crushed her own baby but they had observed the baby and nothing of her bones were crushed or anything. Instead they had found out that her liver was the size of a lima bean.
